Intermail Company History

Providing expert order fulfilment and direct mailing services to our clients since 1960.

Intermail was founded in August 1960 as a Direct Marketing & Direct Mailing business and was the idea of Graham Martin, who was at the time Managing Director of Encyclopaedia Britannica, he was impressed by the way the company in the USA used Direct Marketing to create sales. He was convinced that America had much to teach the UK on the use of Direct Marketing and so Intermail was born.

Stephen Martin joined the business in 1970 as Director in charge of New Business and immediately started the direct selling part of the business.

As the company grew we introduced new ventures and services, we designed and created new mail order catalogues for Black and Decker, DC Thomson (Beano Comic) and Cordings (Mens wear) to name but a few. The service included in some cases sourcing the products as well as warehousing, taking orders, packing and despatching items to the public.

Intermail was also appointed by Thames Television and London Weekend Television to handle their very successful “Holiday Time Sunspots” programmes, advertising Holiday brochures to the public via a 100 line answer phone installation in Thames TV’s Euston Road offices. Our staff worked at Thames TV’s offices and transcribed the names and addresses and despatched the brochures from our West London offices, well over 750,000 brochures would be packed and despatched in the 2 weeks before Christmas and into January.

Professor Derrick Holder approached Stephen in 1987 to be a founder member of the Institute of Direct Marketing and he was very happy to do so.

Before that date in 1985 Derrick Holder was the first professor of Direct Marketing at Kingston University where he started a diploma course in Direct Marketing and Stephen was among the first to obtain the diploma.

In 2003 Stephen was elected to the Fellowship of the Institute of Direct Marketing FIDM.

Holding a great interest in every aspect of Direct Marketing Stephen Martin joined the Direct Marketing Association of America in 1983 and attended many of their annual conventions and was made very aware of the role the “Internet” was to play in the Direct Marketing Industry.

Because of these influences Stephen decided that Intermail should take up the challenge and develop their own online fulfilment business. Intermail today is a warehousing, logistics and online fulfilment company with clients in many countries, using Intermails expertise to pick pack and despatch their products all over Europe and the World.
